  • An "Olympics of national economies and culture" officially recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) and organized by a nation with invitations to other nations to participate.

  • One of the three global mega-events (Olympics, World Cup) where participating nations showcase their strengths.

  • A non-commercial world fair where visions and solutions for humanity's future can be presented and examined all in one place.

Dubai

Inspired by the light and atmosphere of the madang space in traditional Korean homes and the card stunts during Korea’s magical run up to 2002 World Cup quarter-finals, an array of 1,600+ spin cubes cascade over a soaring tent-like structure. Visitors received a Samsung Electronics mobile device to scan QR codes across the exhibit space for an AR experience of future cityscapes and mobility in Korea.

Milan

Flowing lines and an oval form set apart the white building designed with the traditional dal hangari jar as the motif. Embodying the purity of unforced natural forms and uniquely Korean aesthetics of the Joseon era white porcelain dal hangari, the Pavilion was a perfect vessel for Milan Expo’s theme. The grid-based planning of the Expo site met the curvature of the Pavilion’s facade in a harmonious dance of East meets West.

Yeosu

Utilizing renewable energy sources (hydrogen fuel cells, PV, wind, ocean thermal, solar thermal), the best-in-category eco-friendly structure (Green Building Rating) expressed Korea’s taegeuk philosophy of harmonizing yin-yang forces by artfully adding dynamic lines to the traditional changho window shape.

Shanghai

The Pavilion’s identity conveyed through the Korean alphabet, hangul, was emphasized further with “Art Pixels” and “Hangul Pixels” on the exterior. “Pixels” are formed from panels of the traditional saekdong palette as diverse expressions of hangul. At night, sequential lighting behind the “Hangul Pixels” illuminated specific letters on the facade to form a gigantic message board.

Aichi

Four exhibit zones : Exhibit Hall, Cinema Hall, Special Exhibition, Arts & Culture Promotion The facade was decorated with the taegeuk symbol, the traditional kite bangpae yeon, and butterflies. In recognition of the mesmerizing interplay of heritage in IT in the exhibits, the Pavilion received the Nature’s Wisdom Award.

Hannover

In the form of a ship headed into the new millennium erected on a 2,371㎡ site. The Pavilion broke the previous mold of casting traditional motifs and focused on projecting a tech powerhouse image with animated environmental technology showcases and construction innovation demos.

Daejeon

Hanbit Tower : Echoing the Cheomseongdae Observatory in Gyeongju, 1993 granite stone slabs secured the base, the observatory at the center, and stainless steel at the top and aligning light, science, and space to symbolize a daring launch space-ward. Prosperity Hall : A joint exhibition hall for SME projects. The 18-meter tall building erected on a square plan used no pillars to maximize exhibition space.

Seville

The principal concept being a festival tent, the building was topped with a canopy. A two-story building with more than 2,000 ㎡ floor space, the pillars were painted in the traditional deep carmine shade.

Osaka

15 columns each measuring 4 m in diameter, 30 m in height arrayed in a two-row colonnade to carry a space frame and mark out three open, airy exhibit spaces using steel rebar and concrete. Connected by hanging pathways and escalators, a sort of “architectural promenade” was created.

Montreal

A large wooden traditional hanok home designed by Kim Swoo-geun, an emblematic figure in Korean architecture, the Pavilion’s artistic value was such that the organizers decided to render it a permanent exhibition even after all other national pavilions were disassembled.
